So a couple of weeks ago I signed myself up to participate in Indie Pattern Month where I pledged to complete the Kelly Skirt by Megan Neilsen. Therefore I would like to introduce my latest creation... ta da, my very own Kelly Skirt. This is the first indie pattern that I have ever used and I have to say I am very impressed. It is very clear to see the extra time that has been spent in the development if this pattern. Even the packaging and pattern paper are better quality than the big name brands. The instruction booklet is fantastic with a plethora of diagrams for each step of the construction.
The pattern for the skirt is really simple and minus the pockets it is really just a rectangle with a few pleats. This means that most of the skirt involves sewing nice straight lines. Adding pockets like these were a first for me but were a piece of cake with the easy to follow instructions. The fabric that I used came from my local charity shop and cost about £3 and I have enough to make at least another skirt from it (seeing as this pattern used so little). As it is quite a busy fabric I decided to use some navy piping around the pocket edges and waistband to break it up a little. To keep with all the colours in the fabric I decided to sew the buttons on with red thread so they didn't look so bland. The only think I wish I had though of was buying topstitch thread as I feel the topstitching is a bit lost amongst the busy fabric.
All in all I am totally sold on this pattern and I can definitely understand why indie patterns are so popular. I enjoyed this pattern and comfort of my Kelly skirt that I have already bought some more fabric to complete another and I have many plans for more indie patterns.
